One of the most inspiring parts of our chapter is the incredible group of volunteers who bring their talents, creativity, and leadership to our community. The Leadership Profile series is an opportunity to highlight the people behind the scenes who help make PMI Mass Bay such a vibrant and welcoming professional home.

Carrie Hsu embodies the spirit of this community — someone who combines professional expertise with generosity, curiosity, and a genuine desire to bring people together. Through her storytelling and video work, she has helped us capture the energy of our events and share the impact of our community with a wider audience.
Carrie is one of the creative forces behind our chapter’s marketing team, serving as a Marketing Strategist. With a background in both marketing and project management, and eight years of experience in growth marketing, she knows what it takes to capture an audience.
Originally from Taiwan, Carrie moved to Boston seven years ago, studying project management at Northeastern University, where she served as the Director of Marketing for Northeastern’s student-led PM organization. But her deep passion for story telling began even earlier. As her high school’s class president, Carrie realized she was drawn to bringing people together – organized, communicating and energizing a group. Marketing felt like a natural instinct.
Before joining PMI, Carrie built her career in the fast-paced world of social commerce. Early on, she has built social accounts from the ground up, achieving a following of 60,000 people. In her current role, she is involved in planning strategic growth, campaign architecture, performance analysis and business development initiatives for an online community consisting of 260,000 followers. She also has helped lead her team in hosting 12 hour livestreams, selling up to 2,000 pieces in a single day. She has cultivated a loyal audience that tunes in to streams daily – and even remembers her birthday!

From Social Commerce to PMI Mass Bay
Carrie’s connection to PMI came during her time at Northeastern, where she met current president Chet Lang. After designing and posting collaborative content, Chet noticed her work and reached out about joining the marketing team. She says the timing was perfect – she had just left a four year role and suddenly felt ready to take on a new opportunity. With four years of livestreaming experience, Carrie began volunteering by filming events and editing recap videos.

“When Carrie joined our marketing team, she hit the ground running! At PMI Mass Bay, we’re a community built around learning, connection, and shared growth. We work intentionally to cultivate spaces where people can exchange ideas, support one another, and build meaningful professional relationships. Carrie connected with that spirit right away, bringing contagious energy and positivity to the team. Through her work, we’ve been able to capture the moments that make our community special—and share them with a broader audience.”
— Chet Lang, President, PMI Mass Bay Chapter
One of her proudest moments was supporting last year’s Professional Development Conference (PDC), our biggest event of the year! Carrie helped to plan, market, and execute the event, welcoming over 100 attendees. “It’s one thing when you plan something on paper, and another seeing it come to life. Seeing people inspired and interacting with each other, you really feel like your contribution means something.” Another favorite experience is the Global Café. She loved the connection driven nature of the event, combining learning and collaboration.
“Carrie has been an incredible driving force behind our marketing team’s video campaigns back in 2025. She took the initiative to launch the effort, capture meaningful moments across our events, and transform them into engaging clips and reels that bring our chapter’s story to life visually. Beyond producing content, Carrie also developed clear guidance that enabled others on the team to contribute, building a collaborative video storytelling process that amplifies our outreach within the community.
What stands out most is Carrie’s dedication to excellence. She approaches every video with focus, creativity, and a strong sense of ownership. Her resilience, innovative thinking, and communication skills have elevated our marketing presence and added fresh energy to how we engage with our members. Working with Carrie has been truly inspiring – she brings humility, collaboration, and professionalism to everything she does, making her an invaluable and dynamic part of our team. Thank you, Carrie.”
– Ruojing Wang, PMI Mass Bay VP Marketing and Communications
What began as a professional collaboration quickly grew into something deeper. She described the team as incredibly considerate and supportive – so much that she once brought her sister to volunteer at an event. “It’s more than a professional connection,” she says. “My family knows about the team.”
Through events like Global Cafe and PDC, she has observed a range of leadership styles and decision making-approaches. Returning to the PM community after graduation gave her a new perspective, strengthening her long term thinking.

Marketing Yourself in PM
When asked what project managers unfamiliar with marketing should learn, her answer is immediate: storytelling matters!
From Carrie’s perspective, marketing is not just about promoting products. It’s about shaping perception, building connections, and telling a story that resonates with your audience. That skill doesn’t belong to marketers alone. She believes this can benefit everyone, not just in business, but in almost any role. This ability to deliver a clear message and know your audience shapes stakeholder conversations, executive presentations, and even everyday meetings. “Even the best project needs a compelling narrative for people to see its value”.
As a starting point, she suggests starting simple: think about how you introduce yourself. That first impression shapes the way your audience perceives you and your work. As project managers, we often control the energy in a room. When we apply storytelling intentionally, we influence not only what our audience knows, but what they feel and do.
Carrie storytells through authenticity. For her, that means positivity, smiling, laughter, and high energy. Her viewers often share that her presence cheers them up. She acknowledges that sometimes people online just need company. Knowing she can create a positive experience for others is something she deeply values, and a reminder that how we show up can matter just as much as what we say.

Beyond the Camera
Outside of work, Carrie loves travelling across the United States. She spends her time exploring museums, attending stand-up comedy shows, and spending evenings at live jazz bars, especially in New York City. She sees herself as a performer at heart, inspired by watching others light up a stage with passion and presence.
Carrie is currently open to new opportunities and welcomes new connections on Linkedin.
