Do I get PDUs for being a Chapter Volunteer?

Your volunteer activities certainly qualify for PDUs Given the PDU guidelines and categories in the Continuing Certifications Requirements (CCR) from PMI, you could obtain as many as 45 PDUs in your 3 year cycle. (this total may vary, if you have other than a PMP certification).

The category these PDUs belong to will depend on the type of volunteer activity. For chapter officer positions and committee volunteers, this would be Category E, Volunteer Service. Other activities might fall under other categories. Writing a Project Management related newsletter article would be Category D, Creating New Project Management Knowledge.

Note that Categories D, E & F belong to the “Giving Back to the Profession” group, and the maximum of 45 PDUs applies to those categories. As an example, if you already have declared 5 PDUs for Category F, Working as a Professional in Project Management, that would then leave 40 potential PDUs for the rest of your cycle as a volunteer in Category E.

For more detailed information on these categories and PDUs, please refer to the CCR or contact PMI Customer Service.
