President's Message
A Final Message from our Outgoing President
mailto:president@pmimassbay.org
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, President

I look at most of the things I undertake in life as projects and I did so with my service to the office of presidency for the Mass Bay Chapter PMI. Every project has a beginning and for me that began as president-elect when I first announced my number one goal: To expand upon the Job Referral Network.

With so many chapter members still actively seeking jobs and/or transitioning to the project management field, I saw the need for additional support for our membership and to focus specifically on the project management profession / market. The PMCC (Project Management Career Connection) soon became a reality and grew rapidly under the leadership of chapter member Ellen DePaul, to become one of the largest and most active committees in chapter history. After a year, leadership transitioned to June Morrison and this team continued to expand the website job postings, added the web based tool LinkedIn, and greatly helped with the recent Career Night in April.

The Greenbush Commuter Rail Project with Al Goff, Consultant Program Manager, MBTA
http://pmimassbay.org/newpage_nf3.cfm?pagename=Cha...
by Ann O'Connell, PMP, Programs Chair

The MBTA Greenbush Commuter Rail Project ($500M) will restore commuter rail service on the 18-mile The Maplong Greenbush rail line through the towns of Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, Cohasset, and Scituate, Massachusetts. The Greenbush Line will provide needed additional transportation capacity and an attractive new rail commuting option between Boston and the South Shore. The Project will help to alleviate the severe highway and rapid transit congestion in this area as well as improve commuter rail service in Massachusetts. Construction began in 2003 and the Project is currently nearing completion. Preliminary system testing is scheduled to begin in early summer 2007 with revenue passenger rail service expected to start in late 2007.

Building & Sustaining a Global Project Management Organization
http://www.pmimassbay.org
by Holli Jones-White, PMP, PMI Mass Bay Chapter Newsletter Editor

What does it take to build and sustain a Project Management Office (PMO)? Renee Speitel, Vice President Engagement PMO at Hewlett Packard Services gave a succinct and clear presentation on this topic to an attentive audience of PMs at the May PMI Mass Bay chapter meeting at the  Newton Marriott. Much of her presentation was based on personal experience including participation in three company mergers (DEC ŕ Compaq ŕ HP) and previous experience as an engineering and quality manager in the auto industry.

May Chapter Meeting at Newton Marriott with speaker Renee Speitel

Creating and sustaining a PMO requires that there is an understanding that project management brings value to the business. Project Management incorporates good business management practices especially regarding risk. Good project management can bring balance and be a bridge between the business and technical realms of an organization. If an organization practices disciplined  project management, then project results are more predictable and more profitable.

Mentoring at it's Best
A Special Thanks to My Mentor
mailto:president@pmimassbay.org
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, President

Mentoring is when a role model, or mentor, offers support to another person. A mentor has knowledge and experience in an area and shares it with the person being mentored.

In April of 2001, I first talked to someone who would eventually become my PMI mentor. At that time I was getting ready to take the PMP certification test and was interested in what the Mass Bay Chapter could offer me as a potential member.   I ended up joining PMI, the chapter, and signing up for a 2 day PMP prep class.  Obviously someone was leading me in a good direction.
