President’s Letter - December 2006
Report from the PMI Seattle Leadership Conference
by L.F. Desmond, President & other board members

I am starting my message with a recap of what I said in September about the benefits of volunteering and being on the board of directors:

“There is a lot of work and responsibility in running a large organization like the Mass Bay Chapter, but there are many rewards and sometimes that means we get to travel to meet PMI volunteers from around the world.  Events such as the Region 3 meeting held in Montreal this year and the annual leadership meeting-held in Seattle in October are good examples.  Both of these events allow you to network with others holding the same office, meet with chapters of similar size, learn better ways to govern, and share your chapter’s successes and lessons learned.

Networking abounds, and an important sidebar is the volume of information you receive from the other chapters after hours.  We often have the same concerns such as member retention, large growth over the past few years, meeting the needs of our diverse membership, etc.- these events are a perfect opportunity to share and learn from each other.”

A Special Visitor to Our Chapter
Aliya Vikulovskya, PMI Chapter President, Kazakhstan
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, President

The Monday before our November chapter meeting, I received an interesting e-mail from WorldBoston. I had never heard of WorldBoston, but their message intrigued me, so I responded via email and phone. As part of bringing emerging leaders to Boston from around the world for the purpose of sharing ideas, discovering opportunities for mutual growth, and creating bonds of friendship and understanding, one of their professionals was very interested in PMI. They wanted to meet with one of us to share ideas about PMI chapters and learn what we were doing as well.

PMI sponsors award as part of National Engineers Week Future CityTM Competition

PMI sponsors award as part of National Engineers Week Future CityTM Competition

Schools across the United States have registered to participate in the 2007 National Engineers Week Future CityTM Competition. Now in its 15th year, Future City invites teams of 7th and 8th graders, guided by a teacher and assisted by a volunteer engineer mentor, to design and build a city of tomorrow.  Teams must also research and write an essay on a social need.

The competition encourages interest in science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on applications. Students build skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management, public speaking and writing. This year's challenge includes development of an energy plan for a future city that uses fuel cell technology.

Every year we challenge middle school students with a task that would leave most adults shaking their heads, says Future City National Director Carol Rieg. But that level of difficulty only seems to invigorate these kids.

PMI will sponsor an award for the Best Future City Project Plan. To compete for the award, teams must develop a clear scope statement of their project, a list of deliverables, a project budget and a schedule or timeline. Special consideration will be extended to teams that address risks they may encounter while completing their project, and how they handled those risks, if any arose.

Future City competitions will occur in January in 38 regions across the United States. Regional first place teams will travel to Washington, D.C., all expenses paid, to participate in the national finals on 19-21 February during Engineers Week. The grand prize is a trip to the Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. More than 30,000 students from 1,100 middle schools are expected to participate.

Project Management Career Connection Update
http://pmimassbay.org/newpage_nf3.cfm?pa...
by Diane Kemsley and June Morrison, PMP

Last year the Career Connections Team focused significant efforts on increasing awareness
of
PMI Mass Bay’s Job Referral Network. We had a two-fold mission: 1) increase the
number of quality job listings for those chapter members seeking new employment
opportunities; and 2) raise the local business community’s awareness of this free, targeted service
which reaches hundreds of project management professionals in transition at any point in time.
One major achievement of this dynamic team was the launch of the new Career and Job Center,
which replaced the Job Referral Network.  This fall the team is contemplating how to further leverage
the capabilities of this new tool.
The year ended with a Pilot Outreach to 28 hiring companies with
a clear, concise message about WHY a company would WANT to take the time to post their jobs on
our website. The benefits are many.

November Speaker Review – Steve Rankel
On Leading Successful Cross-Functional Teams: The Fine Art of Herding Cats
http://www.product180.com
by Holli Jones-White, PMP, PMI Mass Bay Newsletter Editor

Steve Rankel receiving a small gift from Ann O’Connell, PMI
Mass Bay Programs Chair at the November chapter meeting

Our November speaker, Steve Rankel, a principal of Product180, is a product management evangelist, project leader, and marketer who helps clients ‘Get More Product off the Shelf’ by selling what they have, as opposed to what they wish the development team built. He likes to turn around teams in trouble, and states that it’s better to inherit a team than build one from scratch.

When a Team Fails
A team in trouble is usually desperate when a new team leader is assigned. Once teams have hit bottom, there is only one way to go and that’s to look up. Steve describes four reasons why product and project teams fail including:

  1. Lack of leadership skills
  2. Pride
  3. Not understanding that the team is working toward the same goal (fractured team)
  4. Contention in the team (rotten apples)
