Message from the PMI Mass Bay Chapter President
Transcript of Welcoming Address from the September Meeting
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, Chapter President
Welcome to the kickoff chapter meeting for 2006-2007. I am Linda Desmond, your new incoming president. In my non PMI life I am a trainer and consultant, so I am used to being up front, but I have nervous excitement tonite- it is my first time speaking as your president. I even had to make up a cheat sheet!
You all get the newsletter, the e-mail blasts, know about the website and can read these viewgraphs which have gone thru at least 80 cycles, so I would like to bring a more personal message about the chapter and its volunteers and use this time in a little different way than it has been in the past couple of years. Since last June’s meeting there have been a lot of changes-some of which you may have read about in the newsletter. I would like to share some of them with you….

October 2006 Chapter Meeting - Thursday, 12 October
The Marriage between Product Development and Project Management with Tom Carbone, PMP
http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid...
by Ann O'Connell, PMP, Programs & Tom Carbone, PMP
As project managers, we are quite familiar with the oft-quoted statistics about failure rates for projects and new product launches. Why are the efforts and resources expended on projects relating to product development so high in view of the fact that the success rate for such projects are so low? Tom Carbone, PMP will tell us why and isolate some critical product development factors that favor profitable and successful outcomes. Tom will also discuss the success factors that leverage both product and project success and how both will benefit by learning about the other’s discipline.

Titanic Lessons for IT Projects: IT Projects from Hell
September Speaker Review - presentation by Mark Kozak-Holland
http://www.lessons-from-history.com
by Michelle Runge, PMP, VP of Marketing and Communications
Mark Kozak-Holland of HP Services made a very strong case that the causes leading to the sinking of the Titantic are very similar to reasons IT projects fail. The shipping company White Star had a mission to meet competitive pressures by launching 3 new super liners to service travelers from Europe to America in 1909. Mark stepped us through the construction of the Titanic, highlighting significant decisions made and interjecting the business influences that contributed to the fate of the project.

Reminder of Call for Participants in Project Management Doctoral Study
Improve New Product Success and Profits

Reminder of Call for Participants: Improve New Product Success and Profits! by Tom Carbone, PMP
- Are your new product projects always a success?
- Increased product success directly relates to:
– Increased Profit – Better use of Resources – Improved Customer Satisfaction – The Bottom Line: MORE MONEY! A significant amount of research has been published in the area of New Product Development during the last decade. One reason for the focus is that the survival of many companies is dependent on new product revenue. Organizations have made a lot of progress within the new product development segment for process clarity and efficiency. Yet, published market success rates for launched new products have been consistent in the 60% range for the past 35 years. And worse yet, on average, only 25% of products actually started in development and executed as projects are successful.

Wanna get your PMP? Study group in Smithfield, RI starting 25 October
mailto:VP_Prof_Development@oceanstatepmi...
by Gil Lahlum, Ocean State Chapter VP of Professional Development

Signups are now being accepted for the Ocean State PMI Fall 2006 Study Group. Interested parties can contact the Chapter Vice President of Professional Development, Gil Lahlum, at VP_Prof_Development@oceanstatepmi.org .
Study Group Overview Ocean State PMI sponsors both a spring and a fall session of PMP prep Study Groups each year. The study group is not for basic project management training but is an gathering of professional project managers preparing to sit for the PMP exam. Members of the Ocean State PMI chapter volunteer to work with the study group students to answer questions, share test preparation strategies, and support students in their studies. PMP facilitators and students that have participated in the Study Group program in the past agree that the friendly atmosphere and teamwork eases the hard work of preparing for the exam and is motivational. Registration and Study Group attendance may be used to fulfill 20 of the 35 Contact Hours of Education stipulation outlined in the PMI PMP Exam Eligibility Requirements (http://www.pmi.org/info/PDC_PMPHandbook.pdf, page2).
Approach: The student members of the Study Group shall be grouped into small Knowledge Area teams (usually two students) that are paired with a PMP coach. Each team chooses a specific knowledge area (PMBOK chapter), develops a study outline, and puts together a PowerPoint slideshow covering that topic. Then, the team presents their PowerPoint show to the entire study group and shares their study notes. The chapter web-based message boards are used to maintain templates, store completed study materials for download, and as a communication venue for self-directed and group study activities. Weekly meetings are 2 hours, 6:30 – 8:30 PM on Wednesday night. Students are asked to join at least one Knowledge Area team, and each team is expected to prepare and present once during the 9 week session. A 40 question practice test will be given for each knowledge area.
Group Size: The group is limited to 30 students.
