September 2006 Chapter Meeting - Thursday, 21 September
Titanic Lessons for IT Projects, Mark Kozak-Holland, guest speaker
http://216.65.103.123/booking.cfm?bevaID...
by Ann O'Connell, PMP, Programs
Titanic Lessons for IT Projects Presenter: Mark Kozak – Holland Thursday, September 21, 2006, Burlington Marriott, Burlington, MA Agenda - * Networking Period 5:30 - 6:30 * Dinner 6:30 - 7:30 * Presentation 7:30 - 9:00 Sign up here - http://216.65.103.123/booking.cfm?bevaID=116864Presentation Summary: RMS Titanic was promoted to the public as an unsinkable ship. With redundant safety systems, the ship was considered so safe that it did not need a full complement of lifeboats. Only four days into its maiden voyage, the Titanic collided with an iceberg and became known as one of the worst maritime disasters in history. By attending Mark Kozak-Holland’s presentation “Titanic Lessons for IT Projects” on September 21st, you will learn some fascinating historical information about the major risks that took place during the design/build of this project. His presentation tells an important story that will drive home some lessons for all project managers. In modern IT projects, we often have situations where we believe that we have designed, built, or launched a "perfect" solution. Mr. Kozak-Holland juxtaposes the Titanic story and modern IT projects so that we can learn from that historic disaster and avoid making similar mistakes.

Leadership Transition - In with the New, and Thanks to the Old
Thanks to the Outgoing President - Martin Hatzadourian, PMP
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, incoming Chapter President
Linda F. Desmond, President Elect’s Speech Given June 15 th, 2006 to thank Martin Hatzadourian for his year of service to the chapter Good Evening! Most of us don’t realize the time/energy and commitment it takes to be a president of a large organization like PMI.
- the paperwork to keep us a chapter,
- the many calls and emails,
- the preparation for each meeting,
- the monthly articles in the newsletter,
- are these are just a FEW of the highlights.
But the rewards far outweigh this or Martin and I would not be standing here-nor Evans waiting to stand up here next year. With that said, I suspect Martin is counting the days till the end of his office, just as I am counting the days till it starts, while Evans is still in the stage of pure Euphoria. Since this is Martin’s last meeting as president, I would like to take the opportunity as the incoming president to tell you what I have learned working with him this past year.

Review of the 2006 PMI Region 3 Meeting, July 2-3
PMI Chapter Leaders Meet and Network in Montreal, Canada
http://www.pmi.org
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, incoming Chapter President
There is a lot of work in and responsibility in running a large organization like the Mass Bay Chapter, but there are many rewards. Sometimes that means we get to travel to meet PMI volunteers from around the world. Events such as the PMI Region 3 meeting held in Montreal, Canada this year, and the annual leadership meeting-held in Seattle, Washington in October are good examples. Both of these events allow you to network with others holding the same office, meet with chapters of similar size, learn better ways to govern, and share your chapter’s successes and lessons learned. Networking abounds, and an important sidebar is the volume of information you receive from the other chapters after hours. We often have the same concerns such as member retention, large growth over the past few years, meeting the needs of our diverse membership, etc..- these events are perfect opportunities to share and learn from each other.
