Traversing the Chasm to Executive Leadership
April Meeting Speaker Review - Greg Woo & Donna LeBlanc
http://www.pmimassbay.org/
by Ann O'Connell, PMP, Recording Secretary

Can project managers move into executive leadership roles?  This was the question posed to a packed room at the April meeting by Greg Woo, PMP and Donna LeBlanc, PhD.  Both are consultants with Peak Performance Group, an organization that has designed a curriculum that helps technical professionals transition to executive leadership positions.

Greg and Donna asked each table to collaborate on answering the following questions.  Are project managers good executive candidates?  What project management skills and attitudes are consistent with executive level leadership and which are not?

Building your Business with Powerful Project Management
Reprint from CEO Strategy Magazine with permission

Project Management Overview

Project Management (PM) is a powerful business tool that you can use throughout your organisation to boost personal and collaborative productivity, and ultimately show triple digit return on investment. In this paper, we’ll explore the use of PM throughout the enterprise, and show you how to build a standardised system that embeds PM best practices. You’ll use our return on investment model to illustrate the benefits to your bottom line.

Project Management (PM): THE VALUE BUILDER IN YOUR ORGANIZATION
PM is the science of getting things done. It’s what every organisation and individual needs to do to succeed. The problem in most companies is that there is no set process for PM. According to a February 2003 study by The Center for Business Practices (CBP), the largest PM challenge facing companies is implementing a consistent process. What happens when there is no common process for getting things done in an organisation? From lost time to inconsistency, no process means poor performance.

SIGNS OF POOR PERFORMANCE

• Lost time. People spend too much time creating and recreating processes.
• Duplication. They duplicate efforts.
• Lost knowledge. They do not benefit from the best practices that other people have discovered.
• Inefficiency. They are inefficient because they are using poor processes.
• Inconsistency. They achieve inconsistent results.

Maintaining Your PMP Certification
Reprint - Education Update on how to Maximize PDU's
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, President Elect PMI Mass Bay

Education Update To Maintain Your PMP Certification
Reprint with updates from 16 May 2005

This is the last newsletter article I will be writing as the President Elect as I move to the office of President, so I decided to give you a recap “lesson” in being frugal and getting as many PDUs as you can for free or at low cost.

Part 1 – Category 3 and 4 MAINTAINING CERTIFICATION-Getting those elusive and FREE! PDUs.
There are many ways to get PDUs to meet your 3-year 60 PDU requirement. You can attend a formal class given by a local college/university or attend the cost effective workshops provided by Mass Bay PMI Chapter. But many of us have a “frugal” gene and are looking for a very cost effective way (a.k.a. “Free”) to get additional PDUs. As promised in last month’s article, here are some meetings you can attend.
