President's Letter
by Ed Horniak, President
Dear friends and colleagues,
I’d like to share a Chapter success with you as we greet the New Year. Our December Chapter meeting attendance beat all expectations. Traditionally we expect a very low turnout in December, as members have conflicting family and social holiday obligations. However, this year we nearly tripled our typical December attendance. I can only surmise that this bodes very well for the improving economy and the state of our Chapter this year, and positions us for an even better year in 2005.
In a few days, we will be hosting a very special event, a master class on Project Management Best Practices, by Dr. Harold Kerzner. This all day class will be held on Monday, January 10, at the BU Corporate Center in Tyngsboro, MA. We expect a great turnout for this class. In February, we continue our tradition of exciting classes with a half day class in Risk Management by Rita Mulcahy. Rita will also be the speaker at our February Chapter Meeting. The PMI Mass Bay Chapter is proud to be offering educational opportunities and programs of this caliber to our members.

Chapter Meeting - January 20th, 2005
Moneyproject: Baseball, Metrics, and Project Management
by Hannah Sukonick, Director of Programs
In 2003, Michael Lewis' best selling book Moneyball, revealed how the Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane has been consistently able to field one of the best teams in baseball by applying new metrics that better model the realities of the sport. The Athletics have used improved metrics to invest in player skills that other teams have undervalued. And, as the whole world now knows, the Boston Red Sox have now proved conclusively that such metrics work!
