President's Letter
by Ed Horniak, President
  Hello Colleagues,
The theme for our October meeting is Portfolio Management. Managing a portfolio of diverse programs to their successful conclusion is much like managing the operation of a major corporation or an organization like the PMI Mass Bay Chapter. This Chapter offers many programs to a large and diverse group of people and is run entirely by volunteers. At September’s Chapter meeting I made an appeal for volunteers to work on our various committees.

Chapter Meeting - October 21st, 2004
“Project Governance and Compliance”
by Hannah Sukonick, PMP, Director of Programs
It is no longer enough to simply define, schedule and track a project. Executives and project managers are required to establish effective internal controls mandated by Sarbanes-Oxley in the United States or Law 198 in Canada. Project information must be approved, tracked and collected in full compliance with all applicable regulations and governance rules. Project governance involves major challenges such as identifying which project related business processes need to be automated and how to automate these processes in full compliance with the laws. The presentation provides guidance to help organizations enforce, achieve and maintain these regulatory compliance and governance requirements.

Summary of Sept 16, 2004 Presentation
by Ann O’Connell, PMP, Chapter Recording Secretary
American Eagle Federal Credit Union is a medium sized credit union with 250 employees serving a customer base of 110,000. Its management team was juggling 53 projects without a single project manager in the entire organization. Gary Heerkens, PMP was brought in to build a project management organization, including the introduction of project management best practices. Within 18 months, Mr. Heerkens and his team radically transformed the project management practices at American Eagle. This is a real life success story, presented by the consultant hired to shepherd this remarkable transformation.
