President's Letter
Dear Colleagues,
A 1996 study conducted by Gartner Group found that the two leading causes of project failure relate to the lack of stakeholder involvement and infrequent communication with sponsors. It only confirms what every project manager knows - stakeholder management has become one of the most powerful management tools of the new millennium.

Membership Survey 2004
by Bryon Lavalla, PMP
Last week, in an effort to better understand the programs and services you believe add value to the PMI Mass Bay Chapter, the Chapter launched the January 2004 Membership Survey. The Survey was distributed to all Chapter members to the email address listed their PMI member profiles. If you did NOT receive an invitation to participate in the Survey, please forward your name and correct email address to survey@pmimassbay.org as soon as possible.
You May Be a Winner!
We already have a number of WINNERS! As a token of the Chapter’s appreciation, every 25th respondent will be awarded an attractive Chapter polo shirt, complete with the Mass Bay Chapter logo. Be sure to complete your Survey NOW! Prizes will be distributed after the Survey is closed, later this month.
Your feedback is critical to the Chapter’s ability to identify key areas of strength and opportunity, so we strongly encourage you to take a few minutes to respond to the Survey’s 24 questions. While many respondents have completed the Survey in less than 10 minutes, it should take 10-15 minutes at most to provide your input. We understand that you’re very busy, but we hope you will give this Survey the attention it deserves.
Finally, we offer a sincere “Thank You” to those who have already completed their survey. Your candid feedback is vital. We look forward to compiling and analyzing the responses once the survey is over. Stay tuned for updates and reports on the Survey results!
SURVEY SPONSORED BY:
The Membership Survey is sponsored by Avicon, a leading supply chain consulting firm located in Waltham, MA. The PMI Mass Bay Chapter is grateful for Avicon’s assistance in facilitating the survey. We appreciate Avicon’s generous support of the PMI principles and practices of project management.

Chapter Meeting - February 19, 2004
Register by February 13th to Receive a Discount!
by Hannah Sukonick, PMP, Director of Programs
Achieving Project Value through Stakeholder Management Speaker: Jeff Berman, Executive Vice President, ValueCurve Technologies, Inc.
Holding people accountable for results and managing the change process with key project stakeholders are critical steps for realizing the full value for a project. In fact, studies have shown that 70% of the business value derived from projects is attributed to a company's ability to adapt to new processes and organizational changes versus 30% of business value derived from technology alone.

Education Update
Maintaining Your Certification and Mass Bay Chapter Education Offerings for 2004
by Linda F. Desmond, PMP, Vice President of Professional Development
Maintaining Certification – Getting those elusive and *FREE* PDUs!
There are many ways to earn PDUs to meet your 3-year 60 PDU recertification requirement. You can attend a formal class presented by a local college/university or attend the cost effective workshops offered by the PMI Mass Bay Chapter. However, many of us have a “frugal” gene and seek a very cost effective (a.k.a. “Free”) way to earn additional PDUs.
What's up with Education for 2004?
RISK UP FRONT
YOU ASKED FOR IT! Members requested that the Mass Bay Chapter offer classes, other than PMP Exam Preparation courses, to help more tenured project managers and/or PMPs obtain ongoing professional development-oriented PDUs. The Risk Up Front workshop, like last fall’s Leadership Class, is in direct response to your requests.
