Creating Work Breakdown Structure with WBS Chart Pro
by Aleksandra Illarionova, PMP

It is difficult to overestimate importance of creating a Work Breakdown Structure on the Planning stage of a Project. It happens quite often when we have to deal with a fairly complicated Work Scope; we start exploring for a “less pain-more gain” solution to break it down and build the WBS that can serve well in communications to the Project Stakeholders and take us seamlessly through the Project Planning.  This is when WBS Chart Pro can come handy.

WBS Chart Pro is a project management software application and it is created and distributed by Critical Tools Inc., Austin TX - a Certified Microsoft Partner.
Critical Tools Inc. web-site www.criticaltools.com offers several reviews of this tool by the company professionals as well as by NE Project Management Consultants, LLC, Portfolio-Engineering, Inc. and by Joe Kovac in "Inside Project Management" journal published by Element K Journals.

The emphasis is on the main strengths of the application viz.:

•          Compatibility with MS Project and linkage to it
•          Easy and quick way to create WBS
•          Good visual and effective use of screen and paper to display the WBS Chart
•          Containing enough information about each task
•          Ability to connect to additional information through a hyperlink added to each task
•          Support and create different views depending upon the information one would like to display
•          Allowing to input duration, resources and costs-then to build the schedule by MS Project
•          Easy to learn and intuitive
•          Possibility to tweak and shift task to show Organizational, Contractual and Resource Breakdown Structure as well as Bill of Materials

WBS Chart Pro does not support sequencing the tasks though. So once you are done with WBS creation you can leave it to start working with MS Project for building up the Project Schedule.

WBS Chart Pro is available for a free download on www.criticaltools.com
