Responsibility, Representation, Respect...

We are constantly interacting and communicating with stakeholders, via both traditional and new media. This dialogue is an important element of building the Chapter’s reputation and advancing the practice, science, and profession of project management in a conscious and proactive manner.  Increasingly, it takes place online, via social media platforms - blogs, wikis social and professional networks, and video-sharing sites, etc.  As a knowledge-based organization, we believe in the importance of open exchange and learning—between Chapter members, business partners, and among the many constituents of our emerging societal ecosystem. The rapidly growing phenomenon of user-generated web content—blogging, social web-applications and networking—are emerging important arenas for that kind of engagement and learning.

In light of the continuing communication evolution the following set of principles have been developed to help our members navigate these new environments, for instance when listening to and engaging in online conversations with stakeholders. These principles are intended for all Chapter members, and will continue to evolve as new technologies and social networking tools become available.

Responsibility...

Know and follow the PMI  Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

Members are personally responsible for the content they publish on blogs, wikis or any other form of user-generated media. Always be mindful of the impact that your contributions might have on the Chapter.

When publishing non-approved content to any website, the Chapter’s or otherwise, or online social medium pertaining to the Chapter or subjects associated with the Chapter, use a disclaimer such as: "The postings on this site are my own and don't necessarily represent PMI Mass Bay positions, strategies or opinions."

Members who officially represent the Chapter must act with honesty and integrity in all matters.  As a Chapter representative, it is important that your posts reflect the same positive, optimistic spirit that the Chapter instills in all of its communications.

Do not provide PMI Mass Bay, its Members, or another's confidential or other proprietary information.  Ask permission to publish or report on conversations that are meant to be private or internal to the Chapter.

Be mindful of the quality of the content you are posting.  However, sustained, intensive dialogue is only worthwhile if initiated or enriched by high-quality content which advances the practice, science, and profession of project management in a conscious and proactive manner.

Do not cite or reference members, partners, vendors, or suppliers without their approval. When you do make a reference, where possible link back to the source.

Be transparent in every social media engagement.  PMI Mass Bay does not condone manipulating the social media flow by creating “fake” destinations and posts designed to mislead followers.

Use of PMI Mass Bay social media groups and it’s website for solicitation of Chapter members or personal gain is strictly prohibited.

Representation...

Identify yourself—name and, when relevant, role in the Chapter—when you discuss the Chapter or Chapter-related matters. In matters not pertaining to the Chapter always write in the first person—make it clear that you are speaking for yourself and not on behalf of the Chapter.

Be mindful during your social media engagements of the importance of not damaging the Chapter’s reputation, business interests, and/or bringing the Chapter into disrepute.

Always conduct yourself in a professional manner, even as a private individual.

Be aware of your association with PMI Mass Bay and PMI, Inc. in online social networks. If you identify yourself as a member, ensure your profile and related content is consistent with how you wish to present yourself with colleagues and business partners.

Respect...
Respect copyright, fair use and financial disclosure and other applicable laws when publishing online and on social media platforms.
Respect your audience. Be polite and respectful of others’ opinions, do not use ethnic slurs, personal insults, obscenity, or engage in any conduct that would not be inline with the PMI  Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.  A dialogue is only worthwhile when all participants treat each other with respect.
Always show proper consideration for Chapter member’s privacy and for topics that may be considered objectionable or inflammatory.
Avoid engagement in unnecessary or unproductive dialogues.   Do not pick fights, be the first to correct your own mistakes, and don't alter previous posts without indicating that you have done so.
Adhere to the Terms Of Use, and seek to conform to the cultural and behavioral norms, of the social media platform you are using.

As always, use your best judgment. Remember that there are always consequences to what you publish. If you're about to publish something that makes you even the slightest bit uncomfortable, review the suggestions above and think about why that is. If you're still unsure, and it is related to Chapter business, feel free to discuss it with a member of the Board. Ultimately, however, you have sole responsibility for what you publish in any form of online social media.
